A Study on the Physiologic Weight Loss of the Newborn Infant

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the rate of physiologic weight loss after birth, duration of weight decline and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days.
The factors were examined for the relationship of gestational age, birth weight, Apgar score, infection and phototherapy. 214 newborn babies delivered in S. hospital from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31 1981 were chosen as subjects for this study.
The babies were weighed at birth and everyday there after. The findings of this study could be summerized as follows:
1. There is no significant difference in rate of physiologic weight loss, but there are very significant differences in duration of weight decline and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days between different gestational age groups (p<0.005).
2. There is no significant difference in rate of physiologic weight loss and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days but there is very significant difference in duration of weight decline between various birth weight groups (p<0.005)
3. There is no signifciant difference in rate of physiologic weight loss, duration of weight decline and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days between higher Apgar scored group and lower Apgar scored group at birth.
4. There is no significant difference in rate of physiologic weight loss and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days but there is significant difference in duration of weight decline between the babies experienced in fection and who did not (p<0.05) .
5. There are very significant differe nces in rate of physiologic weight loss, duration of weight decline and recovery rate of birth weight in 7 days between the babies who were received phototherapies and were not (p<0.005).
